An Online Speedometer for Every Trip

Zpeedometer is a free GPS speedometer online. It turns any phone into a speed meter that shows your live speed, top speed, average speed and distance, right in the browser. Bookmark it, or add it to your home screen, and it opens like an app.

Speed test in km/h or mph

Tap the unit buttons to switch between km/h, mph, m/s and knots. Whether you want a km/h speed test on an Indian highway or an mph check in the UK or US, the reading updates every second.

Check your speed in a car, bus, train or boat

Use it like an app

Add Zpeedometer to your home screen and it opens like a speedometer app, with a live speedometer view, speed alerts and drive mode. Curious how it measures speed? See GPS speedometer explained.

Is this speedometer website accurate?

With a clear view of the sky, phone GPS is usually accurate to within 1 to 2 km/h, which is often closer to your true speed than a car dashboard. Accuracy drops indoors, in tunnels and between tall buildings. The accuracy figure at the top of the gauge shows how good the signal is.

01

Measured by satellite

Speed comes from your phone's GPS, not wheel rotation, so tyre wear and calibration make no difference.

02

Private by design

Every calculation runs on your device. Your position is never uploaded, stored or shared.

03

Made for the road

Drive mode fills the screen and keeps it awake, with a mirrored view for a windscreen HUD and an optional speed alert.

How to check your speed online

Four steps, about ten seconds. The first reading usually appears as soon as your phone has a satellite fix.

  1. Open the page on your phone

Any modern browser works: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Samsung Internet. A phone is best because it has a real GPS chip.

  2. Tap Start GPS

The status changes to Searching while your phone listens for satellites. Outdoors this takes a few seconds.

  3. Allow location access

Your browser asks once. The position is used only on your phone to work out speed: it is never uploaded.

  4. Read your speed

The big number is your live speed. Peak, average, distance and time update as you move. Switch units at any time.

Driving? Mount your phone and start tracking before you set off. Never handle your phone while the vehicle is moving.

What is an online speedometer?

An online speedometer is a web page that reads your device's GPS and turns it into a live speed reading. There is nothing to install: the page asks your browser for location updates, and your phone's GPS receiver answers about once a second.

Most phones report speed directly. They measure the tiny Doppler shift in the satellite signals, which gives your instantaneous velocity without comparing two positions. When a device doesn't report speed, Zpeedometer falls back to the Haversine formula: it measures the distance between two position fixes on the curved surface of the Earth and divides by the time between them. Movement smaller than the GPS's own margin of error is treated as noise, so the dial stays at zero when you're standing still.

Because GPS measures how fast you are moving over the ground, it is not affected by tyre wear, wheel size or the deliberate over-reading built into car speedometers. That makes it a useful check for a car speed test, a bike ride, a run or the cruising speed of your train.

Getting an accurate reading

A modern phone is usually within 1–3 km/h of your true speed outdoors. These four things make the biggest difference.

  • Give it a view of the sky

GPS signals come from satellites overhead. Near a windscreen or in a jacket pocket is fine; deep inside a building or a tunnel is not.

  • Wait for a steady fix

The accuracy readout in the top-right corner shows the GPS margin. Under ±20 m is good for speed; the note under the buttons warns you if it's worse than ±50 m.

  • Expect noise in city canyons

Tall buildings bounce signals before they reach you, which can make the reading jump by a few km/h. Open roads give the steadiest numbers.

  • Use a phone, not a laptop

Most laptops estimate location from Wi-Fi networks. That's good enough for a map, but far too coarse to measure speed.

Speedometer online: frequently asked questions

How accurate is a free online speedometer?

Accuracy depends on your device's GPS chip and on how much open sky it can see. Modern smartphones are typically accurate to within 1–3 km/h outdoors. Accuracy drops indoors, in tunnels and between tall buildings.

Is this online speedometer safe: does it store my location?

Your location is processed entirely in your browser and is never sent to our servers, stored or shared. The site shows ads from Google, which use cookies as described in our privacy policy, but those ads never receive your GPS position.

Can I use an online speedometer on a laptop or desktop?

Most laptops and desktops have no GPS chip and estimate location from Wi-Fi, which is far too coarse to measure speed. Use a smartphone or a tablet with built-in GPS.

Which speed units does this online speedometer support?

Zpeedometer supports km/h, mph, m/s and knots. You can switch units at any time without stopping the session; peak and average speed are converted instantly.

Does the online speedometer work without internet?

You need a connection to open the page. Once it has loaded, GPS speed keeps working without mobile data, because satellite positioning doesn't use the internet. You can add Zpeedometer to your home screen for one-tap access.

Is this the same as a GPS speed tracker app?

It does the same job, live speed, peak, average and distance, but runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install and nothing to update.
