How to record your voice online

Press Start recording and allow the microphone when your browser asks. The timer starts and the level bar moves as you speak. Press Pause to stop for a moment and Resume to carry on in the same file. When you are finished, press Stop and save. The recording appears below with a player, a download button and a delete button. You can make as many recordings as you like in one visit.

Private by design

The recording is made by your browser and kept in your device's memory. It is not uploaded to a server, so nobody else can hear it and there is nothing to delete from the cloud. The flip side is that recordings disappear when you close or reload the page, so download every recording you want to keep.

File formats

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Android browsers save recordings as WebM audio with the Opus codec, which is small and sounds clear: about 1 MB per minute of speech. Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac saves M4A (AAC) files instead. Both play in modern browsers, VLC, and most media players. If you need MP3 for an older device or a form upload, a free converter such as Audacity can change the format.

Tips for a clear recording

  • Keep the microphone 15 to 30 cm from your mouth, slightly to one side to avoid puffs of breath on p and b sounds.
  • Record in a small room with soft furnishings. Bare walls and hard floors add echo.
  • Leave Reduce background noise on for speech in a noisy place. Turn it off for music or to capture the room as it is.
  • Watch the level bar: aim for speech that fills about two thirds of it. If the bar hits the end often, move back a little.
  • Keep the page open and the screen on. On phones, switching to another app may pause or stop the recording.

What people use it for

Quick voice notes and reminders, practising a speech or presentation, language pronunciation practice, recording an idea for a song, capturing a lecture or meeting with permission, and checking how you sound before an interview or podcast. To check only that your microphone works, the mic test is quicker.

How long can I record?

There is no set limit. The recording lives in memory, so very long sessions are limited by your device. An hour of speech is roughly 60 MB, which phones and computers handle easily. Phone browsers may stop recording if the screen turns off, so for long recordings plug in the phone and keep this page in front.
