Internet Speed Test: Download, Upload and Ping
Find out how fast your connection really is. Measure download and upload speed, ping and jitter on Wi-Fi or mobile data in about 30 seconds.
Jitter - ms Server Cloudflare
The test takes about 30 seconds and uses roughly 100 to 200 MB on fast connections.
What the results mean
- Download (Mbps): how fast data reaches you. It matters most for streaming, browsing and downloading files.
- Upload (Mbps): how fast you can send data. It matters for video calls, backups and posting videos.
- Ping (ms): how long a tiny message takes to reach the server and come back. Lower is better for gaming and calls.
- Jitter (ms): how much the ping varies. High jitter causes choppy calls even when speeds look fine.
How fast is fast enough?
| Activity | Download needed |
|---|---|
| Browsing and email | 5 Mbps |
| HD video streaming | 5 to 10 Mbps |
| 4K video streaming | 25 Mbps |
| Video calls | 3 to 5 Mbps up and down |
| Large households | 100 Mbps and up |
How the test works
The test measures latency with a series of tiny requests, then downloads and uploads progressively larger blocks of data and times each one. Your result is taken from the faster samples, so a slow start does not drag down the figure. It runs against Cloudflare's global network, usually at a data centre near you, which is shown as the server code.
Tips for a fair result
Pause downloads and streaming on other devices first. On Wi-Fi, results depend heavily on distance from the router, so test close to it to see what your plan delivers, then from where you usually sit. Run the test two or three times; speeds vary through the day as networks get busier. Your request goes to Cloudflare, which sees your IP address like any website you visit; no results are stored by us.
Internet Speed Test: frequently asked questions
How accurate is this internet speed test?
It measures real transfers to a nearby Cloudflare data centre, so it reflects the speed you get to the wider internet. Results vary with Wi-Fi signal, network congestion and other devices using your connection.
Why is my speed lower than my plan?
Wi-Fi distance and interference, older devices, busy evening hours and other people using the connection all reduce speed. A wired connection close to the router shows what your plan really delivers.
How much data does the test use?
On a fast connection the test transfers roughly 100 to 200 MB. On slower connections it stops earlier and uses less. Keep this in mind on capped mobile plans.
What is a good ping?
Under 30 ms is excellent, 30 to 60 ms is good for most uses, and above 100 ms can make games and video calls feel laggy.
