What your coordinates mean
Latitude tells you how far north or south of the equator you are, from 0° at the equator to 90° at each pole. Longitude tells you how far east or west you are from the Prime Meridian in Greenwich, up to 180° either way. Together they pinpoint any spot on Earth.
This page shows them two ways. Decimal degrees, such as 51.507351, -0.127758, are what most apps and maps use. Degrees, minutes and seconds, such as 51° 30′ 26.5″ N, are traditional in navigation and on paper maps. Both describe the same point on the WGS 84 system used by GPS.
When finding your location is useful
- Emergencies: read your coordinates to a rescue service when you cannot describe where you are.
- Meeting up: share an exact spot in a park, festival or car park.
- Outdoors: note a trailhead, a fishing spot or where you parked.
- Work: record locations for deliveries, surveys or site visits.
Getting an accurate fix
The accuracy figure is a radius: ±5 m means your true position is very likely within five metres of the point shown. Phones outdoors usually reach 3 to 10 metres. Indoors, or on a laptop that estimates position from Wi-Fi networks, the radius can be hundreds of metres. Step outside and give it a few seconds; the reading refines as your phone sees more satellites.
Your position is worked out by your own device and shown only on this screen. Nothing is sent to our servers. The Map button opens Google Maps only when you tap it. If you also want your height above sea level, the altimeter shows elevation in metres or feet.
My Location: frequently asked questions
How do I find my exact location?
Tap Find my location and allow location access when your browser asks. Your latitude and longitude appear within a few seconds, along with how accurate the reading is.
How accurate is my location?
Outdoors, a phone with GPS is usually accurate to 3 to 10 metres. Indoors or on a computer that uses Wi-Fi to estimate position, accuracy can drop to hundreds of metres.
Is my location stored or shared?
No. Your position is calculated on your device and shown only on this page. It is not uploaded or stored. It is only shared if you choose Share or Map yourself.
What is the difference between decimal and DMS coordinates?
They are two ways of writing the same position. Decimal degrees use one number per axis, while degrees, minutes and seconds split each degree into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds.
