About Ethan

Ethan leads the tools and the guides on Zpeedometer. That means building each tool, from the GPS speedometer to the decibel meter and the light meter, testing it on real phones, and writing the articles on the blog that explain how the readings work and when not to trust them.

The common thread is measurement with the hardware people already carry. A modern phone has a GPS receiver, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a magnetometer, a microphone and often a light sensor. Browsers can reach most of them, but each one has quirks: GPS speed lags in tunnels, phone microphones are not calibrated sound meters, and compass readings drift near metal. Ethan's work is getting a useful number out of that hardware and being honest about its limits.

What Ethan Works On

How Ethan Tests a Tool

No tool goes live on the strength of a desktop demo. Speed readings are compared against vehicle dashboards at steady speeds and checked over measured distances, so the distance total matches reality. Each tool is run on several phones and browsers, including budget Android phones, because sensor hardware varies far more than most people expect. Where a reading has a known weakness, the tool page says so.
